Austyn Earns 2009-10 Mountain West Conference Scholar-Athlete Award
2010 - COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -
The MWC Scholar-Athlete Award is one of the highest academic honors bestowed by the Conference. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition in an NCAA-sponsored sport.

Mountain West selects Austyn Carta-Samuels as 2009 Football Freshman Player of the Year
•Carta-Samuels is the second Wyoming player to earn conference freshman of the year accolades in school history (OL Steve Scrifes won the award in 1993).
•Ranks seventh in the MWC in pass efficiency (114.0).
•Ranks seventh in the MWC for both total offense (170.6) and passing yards per game (146.0). Has completed 59 percent off his passes (174-of-295) for 1,752 yards with seven touchdowns this season.
•Has rushed for 295 yards on 123 carries.
•Selected as the MWC Offensive Player of the Week three times this season (Sept. 28, Oct. 5 and Nov. 16).
•Guided Wyoming to four fourth-quarter come-from-behind wins this season.
•Since becoming the starter, he has led Wyoming to a 5-4 record in his nine starts.

Austyn named Freshman of Year for UW

The University of Wyoming Football program announced its 2009 individual awards at its First Annual Awards Banquet, which was held Saturday afternoon, Nov. 28 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Laramie.
In addition to honoring the 2009 senior class, a total of 15 awards were handed out in honor of the top performers on this year's Cowboy Football team.
Here are this year's honorees: Freshman of the Year - Austyn Carta-Samuels, Fr., QB, San Jose, Calif. more here ...

Wyoming Wins New Mexico Bowl in Double Overtime
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Wyoming trailed by 11 points in the fourth quarter. Its offense was led by a freshman quarterback, its defense was facing the nation's leading rusher. Time to worry? Not these comeback Cowboys.
Freshman Austyn Carta-Samuels threw three touchdown passes, the last a 13-yarder to David Leonard in the second overtime Saturday, and Wyoming rallied past Fresno State 35-28 in the New Mexico Bowl.

Austyn becomes first Cowboy to earn MWC Conference Player of week in back to back weeks!
Who could have imagined his Venezuelan heritage to come out as he emulated "Simon Bolivar's" conviction to command an expeditionary force and become the first Athlete from his University to earn MWC Player of the Week honors in back-to-back weeks since the league began in 1999. more here

AUSTYN CARTA-SAMUELS, WYOMING
Freshman, Quarterback, San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Prep
True freshman quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels led Wyoming to a 30-27 victory over UNLV in the first college start of his career, guiding the Cowboys on scoring drives of 57, 80, 73, 80 and 26 yards. The San Jose, Calif., native completed 24-of-37 pass attempts (64.9 percent) for 234 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. He also rushed for 34 yards for 268 yards of total offense. Carta-Samuels' nine-play, 80-yard drive midway through the fourth quarter tied the game at 27-27. With Wyoming facing a second-down and nine on the UNLV 15, Carta-Samuels was forced to scramble from the pocket before hitting wide receiver Travis Burkhalter in the corner of the end zone to tie the game. The freshman would later lead the Cowboys on a drive in which he completed 4-of-5 passes for 32 yards, setting up Wyoming's 28-yard, game-winning field goal.
